Tips to Keep Energy Costs Under Control This Winter

Tips to Keep Energy Costs Under Control This WinterWith warmer weather gone and colder temperatures arriving, saving energy this winter in Northwest Arkansas doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. By using a few tips, such as sealing air leaks, covering windows and maintaining your heating system, you can lower energy costs.

Utilize Natural Heat

  • Open the drapes, blinds or curtains during the day to let the sun to enter your home, providing natural heat.
  • Covering your windows at night will help keep out unwanted cold air.

Seal Up Drafty Windows

  • Place heavy-duty plastic on the outside of your windows or clear plastic on the inside to seal out air leaks.
  • Use insulated shades or drapes to reduce the chill around your windows.

Check the Temperature

  • Adjusting your thermostat to a comfortable level while you’re awake and at home will help cut energy costs.
  • Dialing down the temperature 10 degrees while you’re asleep or away can also provide energy savings.
  • Use a programmable thermostat for easy control of your heating system.

Seal Air Leaks

  • Fill any gaps around pipes, recessed lighting and chimneys with insulation. This will keep warm air in and cold air out.
  • Check closets and other unfinished spaces, such as cupboards, for air leaks.
  • Install weatherstripping and caulk around windows and doors to seal air leaks.

Maintain Your Heating System

  • Replace furnace filters every month or as needed.
  • Have your heating system serviced to ensure heating efficiency.
  • Clean wood stove and pellet stove flues to maximize heating.

Don’t Forget the Fireplace

  • Closing the dampers on your fireplace when it’s not in use will help keep warm air inside.
  • Using tempered glass doors and heat-air exchange systems can help keep warm air in motion.
  • Sealing up chimney flues for unused fireplaces can stop air from entering your home.

Water Heaters

  • Lowering your water heater temperature to around 120 degrees will save you energy and injury.
