Furnace Noise: Pay Attention To Those Clicks, Pops And Bangs

Mysterious furnace noises shouldn’t be ignored, as they often signal underlying problems that you should have addressed promptly — before they grow into much larger and more expensive issues.

A well-maintained and properly running furnace should produce an even, quiet hum. While you should have the cause of unusual furnace noises diagnosed by a professional, there are some common reasons for the clicks, pops and bangs you may be hearing:

  • Clicks: Typically, clicks occur when the gas supply to your furnace shuts off but your blower remains operational. This usually happens because of problems with the furnace sensor. If you find the sensor is dirty, you can sand it down to clean it off. However, this is a delicate task that you shouldn’t undertake if you lack the necessary technical skill or mechanical knowledge.
  • Pops: Usually, popping or booming sounds signal an issue with your ductwork, rather than the furnace itself. Popping sounds are often caused by gaps or loose components in your ductwork, though they can occasionally be explained by the natural expansion that occurs when material is exposed to heat.
  • Bangs: Loud booms or bangs that originate from your furnace are frequently the product of clogged or dirty burners. Left unaddressed, a dirty burner can lead to major damage and expensive repairs, so be sure to have this checked out as soon as you notice it’s happening.

Keep in mind that furnaces are delicate and complex pieces of equipment. It is beyond the ability of the average homeowner to diagnose and correct furnace noises on their own, so don’t risk causing further damage or invalidating your warranty by poking around in there yourself. Instead, call in a professional HVAC technician.

At Paschal Heating, Air & Geothermal, our technicians quickly and affordably resolve furnace noises through accurate diagnostics and expert service. If you are hearing odd clicks, pops or bangs coming from your furnace or ducts, contact us and we’ll be happy to send someone over to diagnose and fix the problem.
