Geothermal Air Conditioning System Installation Options

You know how important it is to have a good air conditioner in northwest Arkansas if you want to be comfortable in the summertime. You also know that cooling bills can add up quickly, especially if your air conditioner is not very efficient.  What you may not know is that geothermal air conditioning is one of the most efficient cooling systems available, and with modern innovations, most heating and cooling systems can be upgraded to a geothermal heat pump.

Geothermal air conditioning works like any other heat pump.  It removes warm air from your home and transfers it to a heat sink, in this case, the earth. The system can be either a closed loop, which circulates water through a closed pipe system, or an open loop, which uses groundwater as the heat exchange fluid. Another type of system uses a series of closed loops sunken in a sufficiently deep pond or lake.

The type of system that is right for your home will depend on the local terrain and how much property you have. Closed loop systems are generally the most common because they do not require a body of water and do not rely on groundwater for the heat exchange.

Closed-loop geothermal air conditioning systems can be installed either vertically or horizontally. Horizontal systems take up more land space and are more appropriate in areas where there is sufficient space to dig trenches for the pipe coils. In areas with less land space, a vertical system allows you install the pipes by drilling holes deep into the ground.  In addition to selecting the right type of geothermal air conditioning system, you must also make sure you choose the correct size to meet your family’s heating and cooling needs.
