Energy Vampires: Oh, How Easily They Overpower A Home

energy drain northwest arkansasThe Natural Resources Defense Council reports that DVRs, satellite programming and game consoles drain two-thirds of their total energy usage when viewers are not actively using them. Hitting the on/off buttons on these devices does not cut the power; instead, they continue draining electricity non-stop until they’re unplugged. They are energy vampires — devices that use energy even though they are turned off. Cordless phones, PCs, cell phone chargers, laptop chargers and cordless rechargeable appliances all continue to draw electricity even when not in use.

The Department of Energy reports that these energy drains cost at least $100 annually per home in wasted energy. You can reduce your home’s energy bills by paying attention to your own energy vampires.

Stop paying for electricity that is draining away without producing any valuable function with these tips:

  1. Unplug cell phone and laptop chargers when they are not actively recharging devices.
  2. Invest in some good quality surge protection power strips and plug your televisions, computers, DVRs, music players and game consoles into them. Turn off all power strips when you go to sleep at night and when you are out of the house, especially for extended periods of time such as for work or vacations.
  3. Buy appliances and devices that use the least standby power, such as Energy Star-labeled models.

Don’t let energy vampires overpower your home.
