Smart Ways to Improve Furnace Airflow in Your Springdale Home

Smart Ways to Improve Furnace Airflow in Your Springdale HomeFree airflow through your HVAC system has everything to do with home comfort and heating efficiency. If uneven temperatures and high energy bills are the norm in your Springdale home, consider these smart ways to improve furnace airflow.

Diffusers and Grills

Airflow obstructions can be caused by simple debris buildup, damaged fins, or a broken zoning damper. To improve furnace airflow, first check your system’s diffusers and grills. There shouldn’t be any closed doors, furnishings or draperies blocking air movement between the diffusers and return grills. Next, clean your diffusers and grills using a vacuum brush or soft cloth.

Air Filter

A clean air filter is one of the simplest and most important devices in your HVAC system. The filter captures contaminants and debris, which would otherwise obstruct airflow through the furnace and ducts, potentially causing damage to furnace components, such as the blower.

Make sure you change or clean your filter each month, or as suggested by the manufacturer. You can even save as much as 15 percent on energy bills by throwing away your clogged filter, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Air Ducts

Good ductwork design is vital for efficient air conditioning. Faulty ducts can leak heated air into your basement, crawlspace or attic. To remedy this problem, inspect all accessible air ducts in your home for leaks, damage and holes.

Leaks and holes can be sealed with mesh and metal tape, while damaged ducts should be repaired or replaced by your HVAC pro. Use a flashlight to peer into your supply ducts. If there’s substantial debris accumulation, ask your HVAC pro about the benefits of duct cleaning for better furnace efficiency, comfort and indoor air quality.

Blower Motor

The blower and blower motor can accumulate debris, which hinders airflow, efficiency and may cause early failure. If you feel comfortable doing so, turn off your thermostat and circuit breaker. Then, use a soft cloth to wipe the blower, blower motor and cage.
