Is your air conditioner struggling to cool your home? According to Energy Star – a U.S Environmental Protection Agency voluntary program, most modern HVAC systems or air conditioners are built to last an average of 15 years, completely dependent on make & model, as well as your climate, how often you run the system, and how often your air conditioner is maintained.

Your air conditioner is something most of us take for granted, and never really give any consideration to until it breaks down & leaves us vulnerable to the elements. When this happens, you’ll rush to find an HVAC company to come to your home, and hope they provide a quick & easy fix. However, sometimes these “quick & easy fixes” can’t actually be completed easily, quickly, or even cheaply.

When this happens, you have a pretty big decision to make: repair or replace your existing air conditioner system? How can you know what the best decision is for you, your home, & your wallet?

Quality Service A Priority? Use HVAC Service Quotes As A Guide

Whether you require installation, general servicing or repairs to a heating, ventilation and cooling system, quality service is always a top priority. Before you write a check, it’s important that you know exactly what you’re paying for. That’s why it’s crucial to understand the terminology used in HVAC quotes.

Many HVAC service quotes for electric split heat pump systems will share the same items, so you will probably see components such as these:

  • Thermostat – this is the one component of the system that you are probably most familiar with. If the controller is not functioning properly, your whole HVAC system will be running inefficiently. This may also reduce the life expectancy of other components.
  • Compressor – if your compressor is damaged, you may want to weigh the cost of replacement against that of an upgrade to a high-efficiency heat pump.
  • Condenser coil – this should be cleaned regularly to prevent a build up of dirt and debris which may eventually cause damage to the system.
  • Blower – there are a number of factors which can cause a defective blower. If your blower is failing, it may be a sign that there is a problem somewhere else in the system.
  • Refrigerant – you may be quoted for charges for refrigerant if you have had a coil leak or your system was not properly charged in the beginning. Refrigerant charges are usually per pound of freon.
  • Evaporator coil — dirty coils can create problems with the flow of air and may also prevent the refrigerant from evaporating. Cleaning may be required.
  • Filtration system and humidifier – these usually only need minor replacements such as filters, floats or small motors.
