A Zoning System: For Custom Cooling Everywhere In Your Home

Instituting a zoning system that works in concert with your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system is an excellent way to provide customized home comfort, ensure less wear and tear on your HVAC equipment, and conserve energy and reduce your energy costs.

Customized comfort

Zoning systems empower you to control temperature settings for different rooms and areas (zones) of your home. This is important since many homes suffer from uneven heating and cooling, which a variety of issues can cause. Additionally, you and your loved ones likely all have individual temperature preferences that don’t necessary align, and you may be experiencing daily battles over thermostat settings.

A zoning system is a network of louvers that you install in your ductwork. These louvers are controlled automatically by a series of corresponding thermostats. Each zone has one thermostat, and one or more duct louvers. You can dictate airflow to each zone by thermostat settings, which signal the louvers to open or close, and by how much.

Reduce equipment wear and tear, and reduce energy bills

Two more benefits of zoning systems include reduced wear and tear on your equipment, and lower utility bills. How often would you like to heat or cool smaller, specific areas in your home? Why heat or cool your entire home when you really need to provide conditioned air to only one or two rooms? With zoning, you control heating and cooling throughout your home, targeting those areas in which you and your loved ones spend the most time. Other areas, where maybe you don’t spend much time, can receive less conditioned air, thereby reducing your energy costs.

Reduced heating and cooling not only means lower utility bills, it also means less wear and tear on your HVAC equipment. This will help your system last longer and means that you’ll pay for fewer repairs.

Choosing zones

The basic premise for dividing your living space into zones is grouping rooms and areas that have similar thermal properties. One zone could be the living room, dining room and den, while another could be an attic bedroom that’s typically too warm from the heat rising throughout your home, and another could be your first-floor bedrooms that receive lots of sunlight. It all depends on your home’s design, dynamics, and the heating and cooling preferences of you and your loved ones.
