If you own a home in northwest Arkansas, then you know how much your energy bills can peak during the summer heat waves and the winter’s chilly spells. Therefore, you might be looking for ways to conserve energy, and reduce your utility bills while you’re at it.
Here are several energy savers that can help you do both:
- Get a tuneup for your HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system. Your heating and cooling systems get dirty over time, and also experience wear and tear. However, a fall tuneup for your heating component (and a spring tuneup for your air conditioning), helps optimize your system’s performance. Not getting one can result in small issues escalating into bigger, and costlier, problems. The better your heating and cooling systems are maintained, the better they will work. This means that they will need less energy to do their job, resulting in lower energy costs.
- Be sure to change your filters at least once a month or every six weeks. New filters are relatively inexpensive, and can improve your energy savings dramatically if you’re HVAC system isn’t having to work overtime to push air through clogged filters. Some filters are washable, and therefore reusable, so do your research to determine which are best for you situation, budget, and to work in concert with your HVAC system.
- Use fans around your home during the warm summer months. They will help make you and your loved ones more comfortable if temperatures or humidity rise, and can help you save energy by ensuring that you turn on your air conditioner only when absolutely necessary. This is especially helpful as every degree of a higher temperature can save you almost 3 percent of your cooling costs.
- Install a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to program your heating or cooling systems to turn off when no one is home. Running the A/C or the heat all day long can get expensive.
- Use your windows to your advantage, depending on the season. Leave your windows unobstructed during the winter days in order to let sun’s warming rays heat your rooms. Then close them at night to keep the heat trapped inside your home. During the summer, keep blinds closed, or use awnings or vegetation to help shade your home, and keep the sunlight from coming in.
