Your Current HVAC System May Not Be Able To Handle That Second-Story Addition

Pashcal 02.19.2013Adding a second-story addition to your home can be an exciting prospect, but the truth is that some HVAC systems may not be able to handle the heating and cooling needs of this extra space. If you’re going to build an addition onto your northwest Arkansas home, it’s important to know your options.

A trio of options, depending on your specific circumstances

Some HVAC systems will be able to handle the new requirements, but not all. Here are the options to choose from:

  • Extend your existing system – If you’re lucky enough to have an HVAC system that has the capacity to handle the new addition and it isn’t too old, you can simply extend it. To do this right, make sure that all your ductwork is sealed and insulated.
  • Upgrade to a new system – While this can be a costly option in case your current system can’t handle the needs of a second-floor addition, this will give you the perfect excuse to invest in a more energy-efficient HVAC system. Selecting the right unit for your home can pay back its original cost over the years.
  • Install a dedicated system – If your second-story addition isn’t located close enough to your ductwork’s primary trunk, or you’d just prefer doing it this way, installing an independent HVAC system may be your best choice. The big advantage here is that you won’t be encumbered by the house’s existing ductwork. You can choose from a hydronic, ductless or high-velocity setup.

How do you choose which is best for you?

Since HVAC systems and their capacities can be a bit complicated, the best advice is to seek the help of a professional. An HVAC expert can perform a home energy audit, which will provide you with an analysis of your needs. From there, you’ll be given advice on how to proceed.
