What Are Mini Splits or Ductless AC Units And Are They Worth It?

How to Set the Perfect Temperature in Every Single Room of your House

The Mini Split Solution

The battle over climate control can be among the biggest arguments in a household. Your mother-in-law likes the thermostat set at ‘oven,’ while you like it set on ‘meat locker.’ The perpetual fight over the thermostat can now come to an end. The “Mini Split” is an affordable way to get ideal climate control throughout your house. They can also allow you to set different temperatures in different parts of the house.

Climate control in your home can be hard to achieve. The air conditioning or heat can be perfectly comfortable in your living room, but swelteringly hot or frigid cold in another spot in your house. There are many reasons for hot and cold pockets in your house. Larger or older homes are more difficult to control inside temperatures. Large windows or parts of your home with less insulation–like a garage or attic can also be problem spots. Adding a mini split unit to your space can be the answer.

What is a Mini Split?

A mini split system is an energy efficient and ductless solution to help control temperature variations throughout a home or building. It is installed to complement your HVAC system for razor sharp climate control or can be installed as a standalone system as well.

Mini splits have an outdoor unit that connects to one or more units on the inside. The ductless design of a mini split makes the unit extremely versatile in helping keep hot or cold spots under control.

Mini splits are a very quiet and energy efficient way to add heating and air conditioning to any space. They are able to provide hot or cool air to essentially any room or outbuilding.

Some mini split models can act as a dehumidifier of sorts, by pulling extra moisture out of the air. It’s also perfect for smaller spaces that do not have enough room for the ductwork required for a traditional HVAC system.

How does a Mini Split work?

Mini splits use a ductless system with individual units in any single room or zone in your house. Traditional units use ducts to push hot or cold air throughout your house using a central air system. A mini split uses the individual indoor units to cool zones of your home, instead of the entire structure. They run continuously to keep your desired comfort level, unlike many traditional HVAC units that turn on and off to meet your needs.

The mini split can be customized to cool or warm your room to your desired temperature. Each mini split unit runs air through its own fan and evaporator unit. Refrigerant lines connect the mini split to an outdoor compressor and then circulates the air back to the unit to blow out hot or cool air.

The refrigerant lines are easy to install. Only small holes a few inches wide are needed to accommodate the lines and are sealed to keep your home efficient.

Where to Install a Mini Split?

Mini splits can be installed virtually anywhere cool or warm air is needed. If you’ve converted part of your garage to a gym, a mini split would be a great option to add customized climate control to the space. Got a She Shed or a pool house? A mini split is perfect for that kind of space too!

What Size Mini Split do I Get Installed?

Mini  splits come in multiple BTU (British Thermal Unit) sizes. The size of the mini split you need to install in your home depends on the size of the room or zone you’re trying to heat and cool. Once you know the square footage, deciding on a mini split size should be pretty easy. A Paschal Comfort Specialist will be able to use state-of-the-art computer models to determine what’s best for your home.

How do Mini Splits Save Me Money?

In addition to size, one outdoor condenser can connect to multiple mini splits inside your home giving you even more customized climate control. Doing this, you can heat or cool rooms only when you need them, saving you money on your electric bill.
