- How efficient is the product? Notice the horizontal bar in the center of the label. This tells you how much the equipment costs to operate in an average climate based on the national average cost for electricity. You want a value as far to the left side of the bar as you can find because those cost less to operate than comparable products.
- Is it worth the investment? The number below that bar tells you the amount of energy the equipment consumes in a typical year. Multiply this number by the rate you are paying for energy for your home. An HVAC expert can help you calculate what your expenses were with your old equipment so you can figure out the savings and make a well-informed decision.
- Choosing between similar products – Inevitably you will find a handful of quality products that are fairly even in energy efficiency. When this happens, the features listed on the top-left corner should be the deciding factor. HVAC experts can help you assess your home and determine which additional features are most beneficial for your situation so you can truly find the perfect fit.
As helpful as the EnergyGuide label is, it’s still no replacement for a qualified HVAC expert. Even the most efficient products need to be sized, installed and maintained correctly if you want to get the maximum return on your investment.
